Water pumps in Ballyclare

In the days before tap water, most of Ballyclare’s water supply came from underground wells and streams and was fed to the surface through metal pumps placed on every street and road and behind rows of houses. Most were cow-tail pumps but some, like the one in this photograph were wheel pumps.

The last pump was removed from Ballyclare Main Street on 19 July 1972 by Willie Gillespie and David Corkin. It used to be on the edge of the footpath on the opposite side of the street from the Sport ‘n’ Sound.
